Sarah Needham

Sarah Needham is a British painter whose practice is grounded in material investigation, deep time, and the cultural histories embedded within pigment. Working with hand‑processed earth pigments, chalks, ochres and river debris, she creates paintings that hold traces of landscape, memory and human presence. Her work explores how materials carry stories — geological, historical and emotional — and how these narratives shape the act of making.

Needham’s process is tactile and research‑driven. Pigments are gathered, crushed, sifted and transformed, becoming vehicles for exploring connection, ritual and the passage of time. Her paintings often emerge through layering, erasure and re‑marking, producing surfaces that feel archaeological yet luminous, revealing the tension between what is hidden and what is brought forward.

She exhibits widely across the UK and internationally, with recent talks, workshops and pigment‑making events at Central Saint Martins, the RCA, Toast Hampstead, Broadworks and Oxford. Her work has been featured in Culture Collective Journal, Contemporary British Painting, Télérama, and the Beyond Other Horizons catalogue.

Needham’s practice is complemented by residencies, community projects and ongoing research into colour, material culture and embodied making.
