June Update

Oliver giving a talk on John Nash at the Decorative Fair

Our stand at Petworth Park

It has been an incredibly busy 6 months here at Thomas Spencer Fine Art. Our turnover this year has been equivalent to all our previous years in business combined - and that is just in 6 months! We have so far done at least a fair a month this year and have seen strong business at all of them. Thank you to everyone who has come along.

Looking ahead - we have uploaded a lot of new stock to the website. This is spread between the ‘Recent Aquisitions’ page and the webshop (for items £500 and under). There is more to come however - with our busiest six months of selling also comes our busiest six months of stock aquisiton so keep an eye out on the website.

We have a few more fairs this year. Just around the corner is Olympia (23-26th June). Olympia is a great fair and we have a lot of exciting stock to show you. Tickets are available here. If you are on our postal mailing list you should recieve a copy to the private preview in the post. If you would like to sign up please do so here.

Later on in July we will be showing at the LAPADA pavilion at the Game Fair in Warwickshire. A new one for us. Tickets are available via email.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Three fairs down...many more to go!

We have started the year with an incredibly busy and successful quarter. The year kicked off in January with the Decorative Fair in Battersea. This was our first time downstairs at this event and it went very well. It was a pleasure to meet old and new clients. We had a strong Modern British showing and sold works by John Nash, Mary Fedden, Julian Trevelyan and more.

The next fairs were the Connect Art Fair and the Bath Decorative Fair back to back at the end of March/beginning of April. Both of these shows also went very well - hopefully this streak will continue. Please see the photos of our stands to the side.

Looking ahead we have a run of three fairs one after another in April and May. The London Art Fair in April and then The Decorative Fair followed by the Petworth Park Fair in May. Tickets to all these fairs can be found in the exhibitions tab.

January News

Raoul Dufy - Village Provencal

We are starting the year with a fair few exciting events. First I must announce that the London Art Fair has been rescheduled. The fair was initially supposed to take place from 19th-24th of January but in light of present circumstances will now take place from 20-24th of April. As the fair is an international event it was felt by organisers and galleries alike that it would be best to move the fair to a time when more of the international crowd could attend. We are still waiting to see what is happening with tickets so please hold tight. Those who have recieved VIP tickets - the card will still be valid for the next iteration.

Looking ahead to later in the month we are excited to be returning to The Decorative Fair in Battersea Park from 25th-30th of January. We have a much larger stand in the main arena this time and will be bringing entirely new stock. To book tickets please click here. When the fair was last on dealers were given no complimentary tickets but this time we have a few that we can give out. Please email me with your name if you would like to attend. This is on a first come first served basis.

Lots of new stock is now on the website and can be seen under the new aquisitions tab here and there is lots more to be put up in the coming week. In February we will be sending out physical catalogues as part of the Armchair Art Fair so I would encourage all who haven't yet to send in your postal address if you would like a complimentary copy of the catalogue.

TSFA is now a member of LAPADA and we are looking forward to working with LAPADA at upcoming fairs and events. Keep an eye on the ‘Exhibitions’ tab for new events being announced soon.

We have a new featured work - Raoul Dufy’s Village Provencal. You can read the full featured work analysis here.

Back from Olympia and Bath. Looking ahead to December and January.

The week prior we participated in the Bath decorative fair. Footfall was low but sales were strong - showing those who came were determined to buy!

Looking ahead we have a solo show by Mark Burrell planned in December at Vivense London in Borough high street. Details available via the exhibitions tab.

Looking even further into the future we have two events for late January - The Battersea Decorative Fair and The London Art Fair. Tickets available via the mailing list.

Petworth Park Post-Fair Report

The Petworth Park Antiques and Fine Art Fair was back for its eighth edition, set amidst the Capability Brown landscaped parkland of Petworth House in West Sussex. The enthusiasm for in-person fairs was strong after months in lockdown; despite the social distancing rules, the fair was thriving with several hundred people queuing in the pouring rain on the first day, eager to view the 60 exhibiting stands. Thomas Spencer Fine Art exhibited for the second time and experienced one of the most successful fairs we’ve ever participated in! Pent up demand resulted in us selling out of almost two stand’s worth of stock, across a wide scope of styles, price points and by a diverse range of artists, from Stanley William Hayter to Mary Fedden.

The appetite for established 20th Century figurative artists remained strong, with successful sales for some well-known names, such as this delicate and subtle Woodland Study by John Nash. Interest in works by Mary Fedden was as strong as ever: a favourite Fedden work at TSFA, this intriguing modernist Windowsill Still Life drawing was one such work which found a buyer over the weekend. This lively and uplifting oil of Summer Flowers in a Staffordshire Jug by the lesser known but highly underrated Kitty Church also proved popular and found itself a new home.

Conversely, works by some of our emerging contemporary artists also attracted plenty of attention. Mark Burrell’s playful and captivating mixed media works provoked a great deal of discourse from visitors to the stand, with his harmonious work Sorrento Daydream selling well. Abstract works by Paul Anderson Morrow also caught interest, following on from his exhibition Letters From a Strange Year in April, in collaboration with fellow TSFA artist Sarah Needham. Morrow’s work Lots Road sold; a layered, textural work which combines deep blue pigments with more muted tones to form this absorbing work.

It was a pleasure to be back at an in-person fair and see some familiar faces, as well as meet many new clients. It’s a promising sign that all areas of the market are so healthy after lockdown, from early 20th Century to modern-day contemporary works.

We are constantly updating the website with new artworks, so if you have any enquiries please do get in touch and we will be happy to arrange a viewing. Our next in-person fair will be at Bath Decorative Art and Antiques fair in October: please join our mailing list to receive tickets.
